GURDWARA SRI JANAM ASTHAN BHAGAT NAMDEV JI SAHIB

Bhagat Namdev Ji was born here to Mata Goni Bai and Father Dama Seth in 1270. Bhagat Namdev ji spent his child hood in this village. Bhagat Ji was from Chhimba caste which is treated as lower caste in india by Pandits / Brahmins. Bhagat Ji was follower of Lord Vitthal (Krishna). His father used to offer parshad to daily God. One day he had to go to a distant village in the midst of business. That duty was given to Bhagat Namdev Ji. Bal Namdev ji and went to Kesari Raj ji's temple and performed Yatha Shakti Puja with great devotion and placed the plate in front of idol. There was no movement in the statue of Lord. It seemed to Namdev ji that there was a great disaster, Bhagwan ji can takes parshad every day and it is was not happening today. Bhagat ji offered many prayers to God, but still God did not give parshad. Bhagat ji warned that if you do not take parshad from my hand and milk from the bowl, then I will give up my life here. Seeing Bhagatji's devotion, God took a material form and drank milk. Bhagat Ji's Guru Visoba Khechar lived at Aundha Nagnath Temple, who introduced Bhagat Ji to Nirgun Prameshar. Once Namdev jI went to Aundha Nagnath Temple. The Hindu priests of that temple believed in the caste system, after reaching the temple, Namdev Ji sat and started worshipping the God but the Hindu priests grabbed his arm dragged him out of the temple. The priests said that Namdev Ji could not worship in the temple because he was from a low caste. Namdev Ji was deeply hurt so he went to the back of the temple and started worshipping God. In his prayer he said:

"Joyfully, I came to Your Temple, O Lord. While Namdev Ji was worshipping, he was driven out. I am of a lower caste, O Lord; why was I born in the family of fabric dyers? I picked up my blanket and went back, to sit behind the temple" Namdev also said: "O Lord, please do not forget me because if You forget me then where should I go. There is nowhere else to go and no one else to believe in except You." He further prayed: "Please do not forget me, do not forget me, please do not forget me, O Lord. The temple priests have doubts about this, and everyone is furious with me. Calling me low-caste and untouchable, they beat me and dragged me out, what should I do now ? If You give me salvation after I am dead, no one will know that I attained salvation. These Priests, these religious scholars, call me low-born, when they say this, they tarnish Your honor as well. You are called kind and compassionate, the power of Your Arm is absolutely unrivalled".

"As Namdev uttered the Glorious Praises of the Lord, the temple turned around to face the Lord's humble devotee". "The Lord turned the temple around to west to face Namdev and its back to the priests". That temple is still rotated as can be seen at the site. In most Hindu temples, the water pool is normally located at the front of the mandir, at this site, it can be seen at the back of the temple. Further, most temples face east since that is the most auspicious direction in the Hindu faith as the Sun rises from the East and the Sun is considered the destroyer of darkness and the giver of life. According to the teachings of Sant Visoba Khechar, Bhagat Naam Dev ji traveled all over India with Sant Dyaneshwar. After Sant Dyaneshwar left this world, Bhagatji came to Punjab and camped here at Ghuman village of Gurdaspur district. He meditated here for 18 years. Many verses of Bhagat Ji are recorded in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji
